My Interests

I like: People Who Scribble on Paper, People Who make Noise, People Who Paint on Walls, People Who Act on a Screen, People Who Act in a Box, People Who Act, Other Interesting Things

Since you decided to stay in the foyer for a while, Jen makes a couple cups of coffee. Offering cream and sugar to you, she pours only a bit of cream into her own cup of rich French Roast. She pulls a box of chocolate covered cherries and offers you one with a grin. "They're my favorite," she says. She indicates the bench and you take a seat. She pulls up a shabby but extremely comfortable-looking fluorescent pink armchair. "Excuse the color," she says apologetically. "It was my great grandmother's and she had this thing for fluorescent pink. You should see what she did to great-great grandmother's quilt...simply scandalous!" She grins and sips her coffee, settling comfortably back in her chair.

"So, you want to know more about me? Well, I am a college student at good ol' Moo U (Michigan State University), and this is one of my attempts at trying new and different things. I LOVE free internet/email privileges!

Anyway, I was born in the Show Me State, in St. Louis, spent 13 years in northern Indiana, and now I'm living in the friendly state of Michigan (we HAVE to be friendly, it's hard to snuggle together for warmth when you don't know your neighbor...and if you don't snuggle, you get frostbite!). I've learned that only those who live in Indiana truly appreciate Basketball and John Mellencamp, and Hoosiers are the only ones who truly understand the concept of "Michiana"...then again, I've been told in no uncertain terms that I am only an "honorary Hoosier". At least I know where Earlham College is...

Actually, the rest of my family has jaunted off to a one-street town in western Pennsylvania, but I am keeping my roots firmly planted in the Wolverine state.

While in Indiana, I attended Concord High Scool, but I graduated from Rockford High School, and now I'm in the process of getting an undergraduate degree in pre-veterinary medicine/zoology with a concentration in animal behavior and neurobiology...and maybe a double-major in psychology. Who knows? It's an interesting course load, though some days, I wonder if I should have stuck with that major in Studio Art, instead...Actually, art is a lot of fun, and a real stress-reliever. I dabble in lots of media, including computer graphics. I've made a lot of the graphics and wallpapers on this website.

I've been telling stories since I could talk, and I hope some day to get published nationally. Up until now, I have only been printed in newspapers and small magazines. Maybe that's why I took a position as an editor of the Red Cedar Review. I want to see what's out there...

I have many diverse interests. I spend my spare time occupied with various

Activities: bicycling, drawing, painting, volleyball, genetic engineering, photography, fencing, jogging, updating my web-page...

When I am reading, I tend to choose from a select favorite authors, first, though I also like to go to the bookstore and browse for new material from people I haven't previously read. Here are some of my favorite

Writers: A.A. Attanasio, Stephen Baxter, Steven Brust, Michael Crichton, Roald Dahl, Daniel Dennett, Alexandre Dumas, Umberto Eco, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Robert Frost, John Grisham, Robert Jordan, Mercedes Lackey, Madeline L'Engle, R.A. MacAvoy, Sylvia Plath, Daniel Quinn, Irving Stone, Amy Tan, Henry David Thoreau, James Thurbur, J.R.R. Tolkien

When it comes to music, I can and will listen to EVERYTHING, though rap gets a little old after a while. But, you know what they say...everything in moderation. Here are a few reccommended

Musicians: Bach, Barenaked Ladies, The Beatles, Beethoven, Meredith Brooks, Deana Carter, Chumbawamba, George S. Clinton, Paula Cole, Aaron Copeland, Cowboy Junkies, Cranberries, Dave Matthews Band, Desprez, Ani Difranco, Domestic Problems, Patrick Doyle, Dvorak, Enigma, Enya, George Gershwin, Nick Glennie-Smith, Billy Joel, Lisa Loeb, Natalie Imbruglia, Juno Reactor, Sophie B. Hawkins, James Horner, Led Zeppelin, Sarah McLachlan, Manheim Steamroller, Nine Inch Nails, No Doubt, Orbital, Palestrina, REM, Rusted Root, Joe Satriani, Savage Garden, Simon and Garfunkel, Smashing Pumpkins, Sondheim, Squirrel Nut Zippers, Shania Twain, They Might Be Giants, Andrew Lloyd Webber, John Williams

My tastes in art run more toward individual pieces, though I do have a few favorite artists as well. My absolute favorite piece ever, I think, is this one (below), Madonna Doni (~1504), one of Michaelangelo's paintings. It is a very progressive piece for the Renaissance period, showing Joseph holding Jesus instead of Mary. The perspective is extremely well done, and evidences Michaelangelo's artistic talent, though why he preferred sculpture, I'll never know. The frame (not shown) was carved by Michaelangelo and the painting hangs in the Uffizi in Florence, the de Medici family's personal gallery, which also holds Michaelangelo's David. The other picture here, is my favorite panel of the Sistine Ceiling, the Lybian Sybil. I like the torsion of her body, and, although I like his preliminary sketch better, in terms of facial expression, I like her face, too. I tend to like bright colors and realistic representation, though if you can give me a good explanation for a wildly abstract painting, I might decide I like it. The

Artists: Botticelli, Bouguereau, Susan Boulet, Michaelangelo Buonarroti, Salvador Dali, Da Vinci, Degas, M. C. Escher, Leighton, Monet, Georgia O'Keeffe, Raphael, Rembrandt, Renoir, Schimmel, Waterhouse, Michael Whelan, Art Wolfe

My movie tastes run towards action and humor, though a good love story has its time and place. My current favs: Angela's Ashes, 10 Things I Hate About You, Tarzan. Over Christmas, 1998 I saw Tomorrow Never Dies, An American Werewolf in Paris, As Good as it Gets, Wag the Dog, and Good Will Hunting . I saw and loved The Man in the Iron Mask. What Dreams May Come is a stunningly beautiful and moving film. Mulan, I think, is the best Disney movie since The Lion King. They kind of hit a slump for a little while, there, with Hunchback and Pochahontas and Hercules, but it looks like they're back in business...if not in music.

Movies: Air Force, Clerks, Chasing Amy, Contact, Dead Again, Devil's Advocate, The Fox and the Hound, The Game, Gattaca, ID4, Jurassic Park, The Long Kiss Goodnight, Mallrats, Men in Black, Monty Python's Quest for the Holy Grail, Mortal Kombat, Much Ado About Nothing,Now and Then, The Princess Bride, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, The Rock, Spaceballs, Starship Troopers, Star Wars Trilogy, While You Were Sleeping

Occasionally, I watch some TV, so I have some favorite

TV Shows (not that I watch much...): Animaniacs, ER, Friends, Quantum Leap, Sliders, X-Files, and for a while, I was addicted to Days of Our Lives, thanks to my roommate...I didn't really mind...much

And, of course, since I am such a movie buff, I've got to have my

Favorite Actors of Stage and Screen: Antonio Banderas, Kenneth Branagh, Pierce Brosnan, Sandra Bullock, Nicholas Cage, Sean Connery, Michael Crawford, Geena Davis, Leonardo DiCaprio, Cary Elwes, Harrison Ford, Peter Karrie, Demi Moore, Al Pacino, Emma Thompson, Denzel Washington, Robin Williams

Other things about me that may or may not interest you: I spent three years as a "Proud employee" of the McDonald's corporation. Then I moved on to bigger and better things. I was a night receptionist at the residence hall I live in. It's not a bad job, just *yawn* a late one...actually, I'm now a supervisor, which offers even more opportunity for night-time emergencies. Next fall, I am going to be a Resident Assistant in Shaw hall.

I have two pets...well, only one, now.

But that's another story. Well, there's a lot more to me than that, right? I mean, do we really know each other? You, I'm sure, know a lot more about me than I, you, so maybe you want to even the score and introduce yourself? Don't be shy. I'm draconic, yes, but that doesn't mean that I bite!
